Realize® Voice
FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

I purchased through eSellerate... How can I reactivate the software?

If you purchased Realize Voice through the eSellerate Purchasing Wizard, you should be able to unlock by reactivating. In the trial/unlock wizard, you need to select the "Yes, I purchased it through eSellerate" option. Then when the screen with "Powered by esellerate" on the bottom appears, press the Alt key so that the Start button changes to Reinstall. While holding Alt down, press the Reinstall button. Then you can enter your Order Number and it will unlock the software again.

Note: In accordance with the Realize Software End User License Agreement, Realize Voice can only be used on one machine at a time. Also, due to piracy concerns, there is a limit to the number of reactivations for each license.

Where can I download a trial version of the software?

We no longer offer a trial version of our software. In short, the best way to ensure that all customers have a compatible, good quality, noise-cancelling microphone (which is required for acceptable speech recognition) is to include the microphone with the software when a CD license is purchased.

Can I dictate text into a document?

Yes. Realize Voice lets you dictate text into a document as well as edit text and make corrections using your voice. See the Entering text into a document topic in the How to... section of Realize Voice Online Help for more on this.

The text first appears in the Realize Voice dictation area but then is pasted into the current editable text area. Although this may not be the most direct route, we are working on a version of the software that does dictation more directly. We consider this to be somewhat direct in the sense that the current input focus doesn't change when you do dictation.

For dictation, a good-quality, noise-canceling microphone is required for acceptable recognition.

Is there a way to have it respond in different voices?

Realize Voice is compatible with Microsoft SAPI 5 and works with all SAPI 5-compatible TTS (Text-To-Speech) engines. If Microsoft Sam is your only TTS engine, you can download and install Microsoft Mike and Mary for free.

The most realistic TTS voices that we've heard are Text-to-Speech (TTS) voices by Cepstral and AT&T Natural Voices.

AT&T Natural Voices has the following system requirements: Recommended: 500Mhz CPU w/ 256MB RAM and 1GB free disk space.

TTS voices by Cepstral sample: Cepstral's Dave

AT&T Natural Voices samples: AT&T's Crystal and AT&T's Mike

Why can't the installer find the file RzISXext.dll?

This is a known issue when installing software on Windows 98 SE that was resolved in version of rv40 build 715a and later builds.

Why can't I play sounds when the software is running?

The only way that you can listen and play sounds at the same time is if your sound card and sound driver support full-duplex mode. Full-duplex is the capability of playing and recording audio at the same time). Check with the documentation that accompanies your sound card and the manufacturer's web site for more information on this. You may need to get an update of the Windows sound card drivers in order to support full-duplex capability properly.

Note: Historically, one of the caveats about full duplex mode has been that the audio being played and recorded at the same time must be the exact same format (kHz/bits/channels).

Can I use my voice to move up and down the commands list?

To avoid changing the active window or using your mouse, you can scroll up and down the list of commands in the What Can I Say? window by saying:

"Previous Commands" moves up the list to display prior commands
"Next Commands" moves down the list to display next commands

How do I print out the list of available commands?

You can print out all of the currently available System Commands and Voice Shortcuts by:

  • Saying the command "Save Active Commands" which brings up a separate window containing all of the commands specific to the currently active window.

  • Select the Command Report Tool option which brings up a separate window containing all system commands, voice macros, and voice shortcuts as well as contact-specific commands.

The resulting window display a list of the commands and lets you save or print the commands for future reference.

Why can't I get it to work with my microphone?

First, run the Microphone Wizard. This automatically makes adjustments for your microphone and ensures that it is configured and working properly on your machine.

If that doesn't work, make sure the microphone works with the Windows Sound Recorder and that you can record through the microphone and hear your voice when you play it back.

If that doesn't work, go to the Speech tab in the Options window, click on Settings for the Recognizer. Adjust the Pronunciation Sensitivity and Accuracy vs. Recognition Time settings as needed. It may take a few adjustments to get this to work best for your current microphone and might change as your microphone moves or your environment's background noise changes.

Note: There is no substitute to using a good, noise-canceling microphone.

We strongly recommend using a good quality microphone.

Why does it hear things when I am not speaking?

To ignore background noise, go to the Speech tab in the Options window, click on Settings for the Recognizer, then adjust the Pronunciation Sensitivity toward Low for a noisier room so that it is less sensitive to background noises.

Note: There is no substitute to using a good, noise-canceling microphone.

You should run the Microphone Setup Wizard to ensure that your microphone is configured and working properly on your machine.

We strongly recommend using a good quality microphone.

Why doesn't it recognize my commands?

This may be to a few different possibilities:

  • The microphone is not good enough for speech recognition. You should use a high-quality microphone that has noise-cancellation built into it.

  • The microphone is either too far or too close to your mouth.

  • Make sure the software displays "Listening...".

  • The recognizer has a few settings that you can adjust to help recognition. Press the Advanced button under the Speech tab of Realize Voice Settings to see the recognizer settings.

  • You may need to train the recognizer for your voice. This is not very likely the problem unless there is a speech impediment or heavy accent since the recognizer is extremely accurate.

Note: There is no substitute to using a good, noise-canceling microphone.

You should run the Microphone Setup Wizard to ensure that your microphone is configured and working properly on your machine.

We strongly recommend using a good quality microphone.

Do you support languages other than English?

Our software is only supported with English versions of Windows.

Why did the install run out of disk space?

In addition to copying files to the directory that you specified, the install program (for the recognizer) copies files to the drive containing your Windows directory. You should free up some disk space on the drive containing your Windows directory and then try installing again.

Why am I getting feedback through my speakers?

Feedback is usually caused by having a microphone too close to the speakers. Move the speakers away from the microphone.

Also, you may need to turn down the record or playback levels, and turn down or off the Record Monitor in the Windows Volume Control window.

How do backup my data?

To backup Voice Macros: Voice Macros are saved as files on your hard disk. The default folder for this is your \Documents and Settings \ <UserName> \ Application Data \ Realize Software folder. Backup these by simply copying them from this location. You can open up the folder containing Voice Macros by clicking on the Open button in the Macros tab of the Realize Voice Settings window.

To backup the Voice Shortcuts and Realize Voice configuration settings, you need to run the Windows registry editor (regedit) and save the contents of the HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Realize Software \ Realize Voice branch to a file using the File->Export menu option.

To backup dictation training: Dictation training is stored by Microsoft in the registry and on disk. Microsoft claims that this data is not easy to backup and restore. If you try to do so, take a look at the registry at HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Speech \ Recognizers and in particular HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Speech \ RecProfiles and the files referenced there. Microsoft won't provide any specifics on how to do this, unfortunately.

Why don't certain commands appear in my list for some programs?

There are a few applications that aren't fully MSAA (Microsoft Active Accessibility) compatible. Sometimes (though not very often) programs have their own controls that are not standard Windows controls. These controls require additional programming (by the manufacturer of that software) to be recognizable and working with other applications through MSAA. Realize Voice recognizes and works with all standard Windows controls as well as non-standard controls that have been made MSAA-compatible. Please contact the manufacturer of the software in question directly to find out if and when they will support Microsoft Active Accessibility.
